About Us
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church
is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Founded here in The Dalles over a century ago, Zion Lutheran continues to minister to God’s people of all political and personal persuasions, according to the Lutheran tradition. Lutherans basically believe that we Christians are both saints and sinners, saved by God’s generous grace—which means we are a church that comfortably navigates the ‘gray zones’ of human life, when things just don’t honestly look either black or white!
All are welcome here, no kidding. The God we believe in, the Jesus we follow, and the Spirit who sends us sing with one voice, welcome- welcome the outsider, welcome the immigrant, welcome children, welcome the faithful, welcome." Come. We serve. We study. As Lutherans, we believe that the Holy Spirit uses God's Living Word to build faith in us. We also think that it is really important to study God's Word together! At Zion, WELCA (Women of the ELCA) and the Men's Study Group help us to study together, learn together and grow in our faith together.
So come; come if you're human and enter a local human community of spirituality and faith where we seek to hear God speak in community, word and sacrament, where we follow Jesus and find wholeness.
We worship (check our worship page) in a very intentional manner, singing the ancient songs and prayers of the Christian tradition while also updating our tunes, back beats and accents to sing with God’s global 21st century church. Depending on when you worship, sometimes the music is led by a band, other times the piano, other times pipe organ or guitar! We celebrate communion every week, and all are welcome to Jesus’ table.
We love children, and welcome the noise and joy children bring! Our kids also participate in all parts of worship, from creating art to making music to reading, to praying, to receiving communion and assisting at the Lord’s Table! We hug our kids close and engage them with the worship experience itself every week. Come and see!
We play. Zion’s youth have monthly crazy social events and semi-annual retreats. Our families gather for quarterly social events and fellowship. 
Our outreach ministries include local soup kitchen work, "Fix-it" teams that help the homebound, quilters who send quilts through Lutheran World Relief around the world, and food drives for the local food banks.
We grow. Zion is a growing congregation of people of all ages. We aren’t only young families, retirees or boomers—we are all mixed up! Our families live in The Dalles, Mosier, White Salmon, Dufur, Dallesport, Rufus, and Hood River!
